An Ordinance to repeal certain parts of an Ordinance therein mentioned, and to amend certain other parts of the said Ordinance, and to amend certain parts of another Ordinance therein mentioned, and make further provision for establishing and maintaining an efficient system of Police in the Cities of Quebec and Montreal, and the Town and Borough of Three Rivers. 3 Victoria Chapter 47 (Session 5) 1840 This Ordinance suspends and replaces certain parts, as described, of the 1839 Ordinance, “An Ordinance for establishing an efficient system of Police in the Cities of Quebec and Montreal.” Certain sections of the 1839 Ordinance, and this Ordinance, are extended to Trois-Rivières. An Act to continue an Act passed in the seventh year of the reign of His late Majesty King William the Fourth, entitled, “An Act to alter and amend an Act passed in the fourth year of His Majesty’s reign, entitled, ‘An Act to extend the Limits of the Town of York, to erect the said Town into a City, and to Incorporate it under the name of the City of Toronto.” Passed 10th February, 1840. 3 Victoria – Chapter 47 1840 This act continues, with some amendment, an act passed in 1834 and continued in 1837. An Ordinance to establish new Territorial Divisions of Lower Canada, and to alter and amend the Judicature, and provide for the better and more efficient administration of Justice throughout this Province. 3 Victoria Chapter 45 (Session 5) 1840 This Ordinance repeals and replaces several Acts relating to the judicature of the several districts of the province. The boundaries of the several districts are described. Under this Ordinance, the "Court of the King's Bench" is to be referred to as the "Court of the Queen's Bench" in future Acts. This Ordinance also provides for the appointment of sheriffs in each district, and outlines their duties. An Act to authorise the construction of a Mill Dam across the River Thames. Passed 10th February, 1840. 3 Victoria – Chapter 40 1840 This act permits the construction of a mill dam across the river Thames, so long as it includes the construction of locks to permit the passage of vessels. The act also includes a clause forbidding the complete barricade of the river for more than twenty days, under threat of withdrawal of the permit to construct and operate the dam.
