An Ordinance to establish new Territorial Divisions of Lower Canada, and to alter and amend the Judicature, and provide for the better and more efficient administration of Justice throughout this Province. 3 Victoria Chapter 45 (Session 5) 1840 This Ordinance repeals and replaces several Acts relating to the judicature of the several districts of the province. The boundaries of the several districts are described. Under this Ordinance, the "Court of the King's Bench" is to be referred to as the "Court of the Queen's Bench" in future Acts. An Ordinance to repeal certain parts of an Ordinance therein-mentioned, and to amend certain other parts of the said Ordinance, and to provide for the further protection of the Indians in this Province. 3 Victoria Chapter 44 (Session 5) 1840 This Ordinance repeals and replaces the 1777 Act, “An Ordinance to prevent the selling of strong liquors to the Indians in the Province of Quebec, as also to deter persons from buying their Arms or Clothing, and for other purposes relative to the trade and intercourse with the said Indians." An Ordinance to provide for the easy and expeditious administration of Justice in Civil Causes and matters involving small pecuniary value and interest throughout this Province. 3 Victoria Chapter 43 (Session 5) 1840 This Ordinance sets the limits of the Province's districts for the purposes of judicature, as outlined. This Ordinance also provides for the appointment of sheriffs in each district, and outlines their duties. This Ordinance repeals , the 1836 Act, “An Act to provide for the summary trial of small causes,” and the 1839 Ordinance “An Ordinance to establish Circuit Courts of Requests in the Districts of Quebec, Montreal and Three Rivers, and for other purposes.” Lists of fees associated with the justice system are included.
