An Act to Erect the County of Prince Edward into a Separate District. Passed 16th March, 1831. 1 William IV – Chapter 7 1831 This Act establishes Prince Edward County (or, at this time, the "County of Prince Edward") as a separate "District" within the province of Upper Canada, making it no longer part of the Midland District. An Act to indemnify the Magistrates of the Newcastle District, and to authorise them to raise a Loan, on the Credit of the Funds of the said District, to complete a Building Erected at the Village of Amherst as the Gaol and Court House of the said District. An Act to amend and extend the provisions of an Act passed in the eighth year of His late Majesty's Reign, entitled “An Act to provide for the Erection of a Gaol and Court House in the Eastern District.” Passed 16th March, 1831. 1 William IV – Chapter 5 1831 This Act appoints two additional Commissioners to oversee the construction of a "Gaol and Court House" in eastern Upper Canada, and stipulates that at least three of the now five Commissioners must agree on all decisions pertaining thereto. An Act to exempt from seizure in satisfaction of judgment certain articles therein mentioned. (31st March, 1831.) 1 William IV Chapter 4 1831 Under this Act, certain belongings cannot be seized from debtors. An Act to facilitate the Administration of Justice respecting Enquetes in Civil Matters before the Court of King’s Bench for the Districts of Quebec, Montreal, Three-Rivers, and Inferior District of Saint Francis. (31st March, 1831.) 1 William IV Chapter 2 1831 This Act provides for the taking of Enquetes for the Districts of Montreal, Quebec, Trois-Rivières, and the Inferior District of Saint-François after the expiration of the 1824 Act “An Act to provide for the appointment of Commissaires Enqueteurs for the District of Montreal, and other purposes relating to the Administration of Justice in the said District.” Under this Act, these Enquetes are to be taken by a single Judge of each Court of the King’s Bench, whereas the former Act appointed Commissaires Enqueteurs for this purpose. An Act to prevent a failure of Justice by reason of Immaterial variances in certain Law Proceedings, and to require all Courts to take Judicial notice of Private Acts of Parliament. An Act to authorize the Magistrates of the Eastern District to borrow a certain sum of Money for the Building of a Gaol and Court House therein. Passed 6th March, 1830. 11 George IV – Chapter 29 1830 This Act permits the Treasurer of the Eastern District to borrow up to 3,500 pounds towards the construction of a gaol and courthouse in Cornwall. An Act to Direct the Appropriation of Fines in certain cases. Passed 30th January, 1830. 11 George IV – Chapter 1 1830 This Act stipulates that henceforward, fines collected for criminal offences and intended to support poor citizens of Upper Canada are to be paid to the District Treasurer where the conviction occurred. An Act to appropriate a sum of money therein mentioned, for defraying the expense of preparing plans and estimates of a Penitentiary and House of Correction for the District of Quebec. (26th March, 1830.) 10 & 11 George IV Chapter 40 1830 This Act provides a sum not exceeding two hundred pounds to be put towards the preparation of plans for a Penitentiary and House of Correction, including estimates of the cost to erect them.
