An Act to attach certain Townships in the District of Newcastle to the Counties of Northumberland and Durham, respectively. Passed 6th March, 1834. 4 William IV – Chapter 15 1834 This act annexes the towns of Ennismore (now Selwyn), Harvey (Trent Lakes), Douro (now Duoro-Drummer), Belmont (Central Elgin), Burleigh, and Methuen (now Havelock-Belmont-Methuen) into Northumberland county, and the towns of Verulam (Kawartha Lakes), Fenelon (Kawartha Lakes), and Eldon (Kawartha Lakes) into Durham county. The modern towns of Selwyn, Trent Lakes, Duoro-Drummer, Burleigh, Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, and Kawartha Lakes are part of Peterborough county, while Central Elgin is part of Elgin county. An Act to repeal part of and amend an Act passed in the fourth year of the Reign of His late Majesty George the Fourth, entitled “An Act to repeal the several Statutes of this Province respecting the Elections of Members of the House of Assembly and the qualification of Voters and Candidates at such Elections, and to reduce the provisions thereof with some amendments into one Act, and also to provide against fraud in obtaining qualifications to vote at Elections.” Passed, 6th March, 1834. 4 William IV – Chapter 14 1834 This act eliminates the seven year residency requirement to vote in elections so that those who have relocated to the province from other parts of the British empire may vote sooner upon taking an oath. An Act for the relief of certain Religious denominations of persons called Menonists, Tunkers and Quakers. Passed, 6th March, 1834. 4 William IV – Chapter 13 1834 This act reduces the sum paid by Menonists, Quakers and Tunkers (German Baptist Brethren; Schwarzenau Brethren) to except them from militia service. While the laws of the province required all men between the ages of sixteen and 60 to serve in the militia, the men of these religious groups were except based on their religious beliefs; however, a law passed in 1808 required them to pay a fine for their exception. This act reduces the fine from twenty shillings to ten shillings for every year of peace time, but keeping it at five pounds for years of war. Early Canadiana Online
