This is an amendment to an act first passed in 1835, which made provisions for fire safety in the town of Carbonear, and provided for the funding of these measures.
This act authorizes justices of the peace for Saint John to assess a portion of the city's inhabitants for a loss sustained by one Margaret Griffin in a fire.
This act consolidates all past acts regarding the rebuilding of St John's after the fire of 1847, which destroyed a large portion of the town. Safety regulations, particularly regarding fire breaks, are clearly defined, as well as city regulations regarding sewage and street construction.
