DescriptionAlthough this act states it is an amendment to an act passed in the fifteenth year of George III, it is actually an amendment to an act passed in 1774, the fourteenth year of George III - "An Act for granting to His Majesty an Excise on Melasses and Brown Sugar, sold within, or brought into this Province, and for the more effectual improving and extending the Trade of this Colony to the West-Indies." The original 1774 act established a duty on molasses and brown sugar of five pence per gallon and five shillings per hundred and twelve pounds, while the 1776 act continues the original act until 1778.
